VIENNA SCIENTISTS

Jürgen Drimal: The architect of soulful sound

With over three decades of experience, Jürgen Drimal is a defining figure in Vienna's electronic music scene. As founder and producer of Vienna Scientists, he has not only created a catalog of timeless music, but also helped shape the “Vienna Sound”, which stands for quality and innovation far beyond Austria's borders.

His expertise and international reputation as a DJ, producer, and music director at Radio Superfly are based on a deep understanding of black music heritage.

Jürgen Drimal remains the architect of a sound that cannot be pigeonholed.
His approach rejects genre boundaries and favors a seamless melting pot in which organic instrumentation meets sophisticated modern soundscapes.
He loves to create magical creative processes by not isolating genres.

The production style for Vienna Scientists is deeply rooted in the DNA of Rhythm and Blues, Modern Soul, and Jazz, extending to the ecstatic energy of Funk and Disco via Cosmic Dance, Leftfield, Electronic Dub, and New Wave. The art of soulful symbiosis, not just a product, but a living communication. Emotional precision and rhythmic quality with emotional resonance that conveys a feeling of warmth and connection. A vibe that touches the heart and builds a bridge between intuition and sound.

He works with a hand-picked collective of musician friends who share his passion and commitment to quality.

Jürgen Drimal began working as a DJ in a record store in 1990. Through hands-on experience and in-depth study of vinyl culture, Drimal began DJing regularly at the Jazz Pub Wiesen in 1991 and every Tuesday at the Camera Club Vienna from 1994 onwards.

It was no coincidence that he lived next door to jazz legend Idris Muhammad from 1991 onwards; it was a cosmic coincidence that shaped his feel for pulsating rhythms.
It was a magical encounter and a very special time. The Jazz master became his mentor and taught Drimal not only to listen to music, but also to feel its spiritual dimension. He shaped his understanding of rhythm and authenticity firsthand. He came to know Jazz not as an abstract genre, but as a living, breathing art form.
Technique is the tool, but spirit is the source. Piece Of Mind from the album “Power Of Soul” was the beginning of a lifelong musical journey and a decisive turning point in Jürgen Drimal's artistic development.

The opening of his first record store, Cool Vibes, at the tender age of 19 in 1993 was not merely a business venture—he wanted to establish his own platform for the music he had discovered and hone his skills as a DJ and selector. Here he learned to read the emotional response of the audience in order to discover his unique style and unmistakable sound – a skill he later perfected as an international DJ worldwide.

Since 1995, his DJ bookings have taken him to international metropolises and renowned clubs, where he is appreciated for his unmistakable groovy mix of soulful Downbeat, Nu Disco, House, and Rare Groove.

In 1997, Jürgen Drimal and his companion Gernot Ebenlechner founded the Freedom Satellite project, laying the foundation for Vienna Scientists and the “Electronic New Skool.” The legendary Vienna Scientists compilation series is considered a milestone in Austrian music history, bringing together established artists with exciting new discoveries that have influenced an entire generation of musicians.

The story of a search for the perfect groove — a rhythm that not only moves the body but also speaks to the soul. It is this soulful quality and his unmistakable signature that has endured for three decades: fresh, rich, sexy, timeless, and soulful.
